The start of this story finds Ella Durand, who is eleven years old, about to start her first term at a new school. She is going to be boarding at the Arcanum Training Institute which is really a school for Marvellers. Due to some change in the rules , this school has decided to let Conjurers like Ella be educated there. However Ella is the first one of her kind to do this, so in some ways she is to be an experiment.
The school is miles away from Ella`s home and she has to travel across the clouds to get there. On her first journey , her parents, younger sister and her mothers pet alligator are permitted to go with her to help Ella in her new surroundings.
When they get there Ella finds it hard to make new friends because the other pupils soon realise that she is not really one of them. Bullying is not permitted at the school but some of the other girls are really quite unfriendly. Throughout the story we are taken to fantastic surroundings and we meet some interesting characters along with many weird creatures.
