This is the first of what are to be series of thrillers and it is a good start with a complex and attention catching plot that introduces the main characters and sets out some of their backstories. This is both a blessing and a curse however in that at times for me there is too much of a focus on the main character Charlie Priest's backstory such as his dissociative disorder that did not really add at this stage to the plot and for me slowed down the overall pace of the story.

This has not however stopped me from reading this novel twice and I have enjoyed it more the second time. The plot revolves around a group of individuals using a drug developed by the Nazis against individuals as a means to enjoy their suffering and through this to see God. This has gone on since after the war and has been covered up by successive governments through the use of a domestic extremism unit that prevents local police investigating the deaths of the organisation's victims.

Charlie Priest becomes involved after he is attacked in his own home by someone whom he has never met before demanding a data stick from him that he has no knowledge of possessing. So starts the story that quickly develops into an investigation by Charlie and his employees set amidst a police investigation that seeks to place Charlie as the main suspect in relation to the death of his attacker. From the outset there is the suspicion of the involvement of higher powers and a real threat to both Charlie and those that help him.

Charlie's background is that he as a police officer before being obliged to leave the service and retraining as a lawyer who has a very successful private practice that specialises in investigating corporate fraud. This skillset is put to good use in the ensuing investigation and the final gripping endplay.

Overall I enjoyed this book and would look forward to reading the next instalment in the series to see how Charlie and his cohorts evolve moving on from this story and to learn more about Charlie's backstory.
