4 stars well deserved! I cannot recommend this book enough.

The writing style is incredibly smooth and easy to read. But also effective at ensuring drama and suspense. Varying sentence lengths broken up by dialog reads perfectly considering the sometimes staccato nature of the text.

The characters are likeable but vague enough to keep you guessing about their connection to the crime. I wouldn't necessarily say I relate to the characters nor form a particular affinity with them. But having said that, I would definitely be interested to see what happens to them next.

The storyline is intelligent and unique merging genres in a way I haven't seen before. It comes across as a very modern crime fiction although the actual drama originated during the war so flashbacks break up the action and helps build a greater tension. At first I found the flashbacks hard to read as they are infrequent compared to the mass of modern day text. This is reversed later on in the book, however, as it is cleverly used to unravel the plot.

This book is definitely different to the dull monotony of modern crime fiction so I would recommend this for any lover of crime and thriller looking for a slightly different read. But it would also be a fantastic introduction to the crime genre for someone normally interested in something like historical fiction. Loved it! Excited for the next installement!
