The Missing Years by Lexie Elliot gets off to an intriguing start with the main character, Ailsa, and her half-sister, arriving at a Scottish manse that Ailsa has part inherited from their late mother. The other half being owned by the father Ailsa hasn't seen, nor had any contact with, since he left many years before when she was only seven years old at which point she and her mother left the house. Over the years her mother has rented out the house although any rental agreement or sale should only be done with the agreement of the joint owner meaning that now Ailsa can't sell the house unless she finds her father and he agrees. Ailsa has very mixed feelings about the manse as she stands outside looking at it before going in and trying unsuccessfully to access any memories of living there that might be deep in her subconscious. Her uneasiness leads to a sleeplessness night and when she rises in the early hours for a glass of water she finds a young man in the hallway. He turns out to be a neighbour looking for his sister who is drawn to the house and often goes there when nobody is there. The first look gives the reader a few mysteries to dwell on and I was disappointed to come to the end leaving me very keen to read the rest of this gripping book. There was only one error in the first few lines that did stand out where the author describes the manse as a tall structure - three "stories" high. I imagine all books are proofread at least once and errors like this should really be spotted. In spite of this I'm sure this book will be enjoyed by many readers and I'll certainly be one of them.
