Soon after her mother dies Ailsa Calder discovers she has inherited half of ‘The Manse’, a sprawling house in the cold Scottish Highlands and where she lived as a child before her father mysteriously disappeared. When she and her half sister Carrie move in, strange events start to occur and Ailsa doesn’t know who to trust or believe.
I enjoyed this book. It plodded along in some parts but it was a decent enough mystery and I didn’t guess the ending which is always a bonus. The book is incredibly rich in atmosphere; the dark and brooding sense of unease which hung over The Manse really added to the story and the characters were an interesting and diverse lot and all played relevant parts within the book.
