Disappointingly slow

This was not as good as I expected.
From the first look, I thought this book had promise - I love a good mystery/thriller. But nothing really happens for almost two thirds. I get that the writer was setting the scene but it just took too long to get off the ground. I was disappointed with the ending and though it surprised me, it doesn't quite deserve to be a twist. The plot was engaging enough but it just felt slow. There are some unanswered questions at the end which add to the intrigue. An entertaining read though and I did like the careful detail to the Scottish dialiect. I also picked up a few new words which makes a nice change. There are strong themes of family, belonging and community.
