Eerie is an understatement

I must admit I struggled for a large part of this book, I thought the pace was too slow and the mysteries too random but I persevered and was very pleased I did so.

This book was properly creepy,in a I-can't-put-it-down way. The mystery, the threats and the musings kept me reading through it.

Alisa, the lead character, is wonderfully written, as a person who starts of rational and becomes more and more paranoid as events unfold, almost to the point of believing in time bending and the"Manse" being alive. But not in a sci-fi thriller kind of way, in an eerie, things that go bump in the night sense. The character development is good, and the little hints and remarks also build in. I really liked the explanations towards the end that tied in to this exponential change.

The long running theme is the disappearance of her father when she was a child, and the reprecussions and assumptions that led to from the locals in the area, along with her own musings.

The sense of threat and general creepiness builds over time, and the suspects and feelings are analysed in such a believable way through the eyes of Alisa. I really felt I was there with the characters getting steadily freaked more and more out with each reveal

Another really nice thing was the contrast between the paranoia and odd events, and life in general continuing as normal,it added real emphasis and diverted me as a reader trying to figure it all out in advance.

I don't want to spoil anything, but I'd be surprised if anyone saw the ending twist coming!
