This was one of those generic novels: A family drama and secrets that nobody wants to be revealed, but inevitably are by the end of the book. There is nothing wrong with that formula, it works, but this book isn’t exactly original and I could largely predict the outcome from the very start.

I wonder if this is the reason that I struggled so much to get into the swing of this novel. It wasn’t badly written per se, it just didn’t draw me in particularly easily or quickly.

As might be expected, the common ‘twist’ appeared at around about the halfway point and from this stage, I admit I enjoyed it more.

I don’t often give up on books, unless they are very bad indeed but if this hadn’t picked up when it did, I may have given up.

I’m actually glad I didn’t - this was enjoyable, just not the most riveting read of my life.
