This book is set in the Highlands in Scotland and this is what drew me to it as it is a setting I love. Unfortunately we got very little of the setting. It's all about the house, called the Manse, indeed the house is the central character of the story.
Ailsa Calder inherits half the house, the other half belongs to her father who disappeared twenty seven years ago, and goes to live there with her half sister. They haven't been close and their relationship is very edgy and tense. This got a bit much for me. The constant tension and little digs at each other just got annoying.
There are a lot of characters in this book and we don't really get to know any of them in dept. In fact most of them are downright unlikable.
The mystery is good but drawn out. I was bored of it before the book ended.
There is some lovely writing and descriptions which I always appreciate.
People who enjoy a slow, very slow burn of a novel and a good mystery will enjoy this. It just wasn't for me.
