The Missing Years by Lexie Elliot had me griped from the beginning. A suspense filled mystery with the disappearance of Ailsa Calder’s father 27 years ago combined with the more gothic and ghostly goings on inside the mystery of the Manse. A house Ailsa has inherited after the death of her mother.

The Manse is central to the story, it is what has brought Ailsa back to the Scottish highlands from London and is as much of a character as the many others we meet during the book.

I enjoyed the relationship between Ailsa and her half sister, both learning to live together and getting to know each other all over again after spending so much time apart. As Ailsa had been away for so long she was getting to know everyone in the same way we were and trying to figure out who she could trust or more importantly who she shouldn’t.

I really enjoyed the more spooky aspect of the story, where you are so immersed in what you are reading that you also begin to question the creaks and noises you hear in the night and the shadows you see out of the corner of your eye just like Ailsa was.

This book had many paths it could of taken us down considering the history of the house and the area that surrounds it plus the time folding aspect and how all these things were connected to each other which made it such a page turner and intriguing read so I was a little disappointed with the explanations and conclusion that it took at the end. For me it came from nowhere, seemed a little rushed and just wasn’t as satisfying as I had hoped.

Even though it wasn’t an ending I would of hoped for it was still a really enjoyable atmospheric read. It kept me captivated enough to of read it in just a matter of days and so I would still recommend it to others.
