Historical fiction is always a go to read for me, but this was an interesting story that surprised me with the historical background, yet it remains very beautiful and thought provoking.

Buchanan writing was rather slow to begin with but once u truly got your teeth into the story and if you’re interested in key historical events then this will book will surely keep you gripped right till the end.

This story starts in a strange order that eventually works out when moved to present-day Paris. Over the book, we are shown as readers between Laure's past life in communist Prague where she worked as an au-pair to a Czech family. Her present life in Paris, as founder and curator of the museum. And her time in between, working for the British Embassy in the newly reunited Berlin.

At the heart of the story is her romance with Tomas; a political opponent to the communist regime, a musician whose hidden lyrics give hope to others.
