The museum of broken promises is a beautifully written novel that I was engaged in from the very beginning. After only reading the prologue I was extremely intrigued and had to force myself to put my laptop down as I was in need of eating. The novel includes dialect frequently but is still understandable. It is a domestic fiction surrounding self-redemption and acceptance of the past.

The prologue is set in Prague 1985 when the communist based city faced multiple political issues. Laure finds herself hidden in Prague due to the sudden loss of her father. Whilst attempting to grieve and recover from her fathers passing she encounters a young man with opposing views to Prague's laws and politics. Suddenly, Laure finds herself lost and betrayed. Buchan uses imagery which creates a sense of empathy for the reader as it captures Laure's miserable surroundings and the feelings that follow.

Years later, in modern day France, Laure is the owner of "The museum of broken promises". The museum is filled with anonymously donated memories, some of which are Laure's. Many visitors of the museum find themselves in the midst of an emotional outburst as the artefacts confront their true emotions. Surrounded by her past Laure finds that it's time to remember and accept her past, her life changing love and where it lead her. It's a mesmerizing tale, from beautiful quotes to the story line, about learning to love and accept where you've come from and who you were.
