The story opens up at a train station in Austria, where a young girl waits nervously for the man she has fallen in love with. The writer then takes us on a journey through time to Paris, Prague and Berlin. Laure Carlyle is the young girl we travel with as she navigates her way through loss and heartbreak to become the curator of a beautiful though sometimes sad museum in Paris,' The Museum of Broken Promises'.

Laure is a naive young girl recovering from the death of her father, her mother is French and suggests some time living in France may help her to heal ,resulting in an au pair position with a Czech family. The family return to their home country, Prague, for some time and life for Laure changes dramatically. For a naive 20 year old from Yorkshire, life in a Communist country is bewildering and sometimes dangerous, secret police and even her employer Petr all present a threat, who can she trust?

Laure meets Tomas and his group of friends at a puppet theatre she takes the children to and falls in love with him in a short time. He is a charismatic lead singer with a rock group who are all dissidents and the message in their music puts them in grave danger with the authorities, plans must be made but promises will be broken!

Laure brings her broken heart and broken promises to Paris and tries to rebuild a life for herself. Sad and lonely, even with her beautiful museum, she shuts her life into boxes which she never unpacks. However, token memories she places in the museum will lead a determined American reporter to dig into the past and give Laure closure. This book has not just one love story but many to tell, it is beautifully written and bittersweet.
