I absolutely loved this book.
It pulled at my heart from the opening and took me vividly into the city of Paris to a unique museum that explores simple and everyday objects that link to those connected to them. It is the central story and its broken promise that is so deeply moving; the broken promise is symbolised by a single train ticket that was added to the museum by its owner/curator. The story of this ticket takes us into 1980s Prague, and the dangerous world beyond the Iron Curtain, the story of Laure, her love for a dissident musician and the terrible ramifications of this relationship.
A captivating writing style and telling that I thoroughly enjoyed. It also opened up the human stories of people during the Cold War and is a stark reminder of what can happen under extreme and rigid control... but it's also a human story about personal recovery and letting go.
