Have you ever read a book which not only impacts you but also educates you? Well the museum of broken promises did both to me. I have been to Berlin and I wish I had read this novel sooner because my understanding of the Cold War has definitely increased.

This novel travels from present day Paris to Prague to Berlin after the wall came down. Laure is the curator of the Museum of Broken Promises. Among the objects on display is a piece of her own life which holds a key to her own experiences as a young woman in love in a communist country.

Laure takes a job as an au pair in communist Prague . Her employer favours the communist regime but she falls in love with Tomas a musician and a dissident. She is split between both sides feeling allegiance to both her employer and her boyfriend. The brutality of communism is wonderfully portrayed alongside the love Laure feels for Tomas.

This was an emotional novel for me. I was cheering on Laure and Tomas and hoping their love would conquer all. The narrative was fantastic transporting me to The Cold War period and making me want to find out more about it!!

Overall this novel was brilliantly written, fantastically researched and very informative and demonstrated that love endures no matter what stands in its way. I will definitely look out for more books by this wonderful author.
