On the surface this read as being about a woman and an obscure museum. However, it soon turned into something much more meaningful and poignant. This book sings and champions the power of love and utter determination.

The museum reflects the private moments in people's lives in such a clever and sensitive way. The final chapter means that the novel comes full circle, giving us the ending we wish and desire for.

Structurally, the novel moves between past and present (increasingly common) but Buchan manages to link the three stages of Laure's life together seamlessly. The intricate details that are given to us about Laure, Eva, Tomas and the cat means that the story really comes to life.

The description is well written but most intriguing was the insight into the history of Europe. The marionettes are portrayed in a life like way - again a compliment to Buchan.

A beautiful book that all would enjoy.
