Laure is the curator of The Museum of Broken Promises, a place where objects hold significant meaning to the person who donates them. Although Laure seems happy living in Paris and running the museum there is a sadness about her, something which harks back to her past in Prague in 1985.

The blurb for this book was inviting and I looked forward to starting it but sadly I really struggled. I found it to be far too full of cheesy stilted dialogue. Laure was so formal in her language that at times I felt like the book was set in Victorian times and not the 1980’s! I also didn’t like the way the timeline randomly jumped about, that confused me several times. I didn’t invest in any of the characters - none were particularly likeable so I couldn’t really have cared much about what happened to any of them, and while I’d be interested to learn a bit about Czechoslovakian politics during that time I felt that side of the book was far too heavy and really repetitive.

Other reviewers have raved about this book so I think I may be in the minority. If you like romantic fiction, with a bit of history thrown in for good measure, this could be right up your street but sadly it wasn’t a winner for me.
