Elizabeth Buchan has created an extremely impactful and unique story with 'The Museum of Broken Promises'. Museums are places that have always fascinated me, giving us a window to the past and thinking of the stories that the objects may contain, some of which we will never know. Paris is also somewhere I would really love to visit, so the two of these together really interested me about this book. The backstory to each of the everyday objects with their own personal heartbreaking stories which link them to a haunting past is a unique selling point of the book. The fact that the protagonist, Laure, the curator and museum owner is tied up with these objects and others from her own past that help her to deal with her own painful memories, put right out on display. There are some dark moments, and the city becomes a character in itself. Her doomed romance and the ghosts of the past are outstanding elements of the book. A wonderful, thought-provoking read.
