This book really exceeded my expectations!

Set in the Cold War era, mainly in Eastern Europe, the book follows Laure as she tries to navigate the political climate she has found herself caught up. Falling in love with Tomas she becomes embroiled with him and his rebellious friends, ending up getting arrested and tortured herself at one point.

The romance between Laure and Tomas was believable and I desperately wanted them to stay together and work things out. Although in a way i'm glad they didn't because it added another level to the plot.

I loved the way the book was set out, jumping between 3 different time periods, 1986, 1996 and the present day. In each chapter we were told different parts of the story, adding details that allowed us as the reader to piece the story together ourselves.

I liked the character of Laure and felt sorry for her and willed her to escape. It was sad to see how the past events had really affected her.

The book was full of plot twists and surprises which kept me intrigued and wanting to read more.

Overall I really enjoyed this book!
