I really loved the look of this book and the concept of a "Museum of Broken Promises" but I generally found this story a bit, dare I say it, dull.
Laure is the curator of the museum and chooses what makes the cut. 7 rooms of various items which represent broken promises of one kind or another - including an item of hers (a train ticket).
So how does this ticket constitute a broken promise? This is what the book goes back in time to explore.
Laure is living in Prague - which is still in the grip of communism - and looking after the children of Petr and Eva. She's bored and drawn to the marionette theatre, where she meets Tomas and promptly falls head over heels in love. He's an angry young rebel though and having a British girlfriend just draws him to the attention of the authorities even more than before.
The problem for me was that I wasn't drawn in by the writing style - it all felt a little staid and unemotional. I wasn't convinced by Laure's great love and struggled to understand the relationship between her and Petr.
Perhaps it's a natural peril of looking forward to a book - the potential for disappointment is all the greater if you don't love it as much as you thought you would.
I still adore the cover - shame I was so bored by the contents.
