I'm not really sure where to start with my review of 'The Museum of Broken Promises'. The white and gold cover grabbed my attention, making me wonder what relevance each artefact had to the story, and the blurb sounded intriguing. I expected a book with the same intrigue and charm as 'The Miniaturist' with an ever-building, all-consuming love affair.

However, I was quite disappointed by the story if I'm honest. I really enjoyed the first third of the book, in which the narrative switched between the main character's past and present, as the book hinted what her broken promise was. I had expected to learn more about each artefact in the museum and the stories behind them, but unfortunately this didn't happen for many of them.

What's more, I didn't believe in (or care about) the romance between Laure and Tomas, which was a shame.

Finally, the main thing that made this book quite hard work for me was the heavy focus on communism and politics.

To summarise, 'The Museum of Broken Promises' isn't a bad book. It just wasn't my cup of tea.
