The little boy is definitely using food as a mechanism to help with his fear of the war and what he has seen.
From what I can gather he is a little german orphan, who winds up in America. He is told to stop speaking german and learn english, so that he fits in I'm guessing. Obviously troubled, he is sent away for the summer holidays to Cape Cod....and that's where I have got up to.
