I wasn't really sure what to expect from this book but I have to say I am impressed by the opening. The juxtaposition of the boy's escape from a Germany ravaged by the second World War and his journey from New York to Cape Cod are well balanced and made strangely riveting reading. The late 1940s is evoked well in sparse strokes as are the characters of the people involved.
