Set in the 1950's in Cape Cod the story is set in late summer. When people are lazing about on the beach, going for summer walks and generally people watching and getting to know new faces.
Michael is ten and staying with a friend and his mother , but all is not well with her. The boys are left to fend for themselves most of the time and they meet Jo and Edward Hopper. She is passionate and suffers bouts of jealousy and when she gets in one of her moods every one knows it . They are artists and as Edward is unwell he gets bouts of depression as he cannot work. This sounds like a book to make you want to close the cover with all the misery but it strangely draws you in as the two young boys follow a summer of freedom in Cape Cod as world war II becomes a thing of the past
