The Narrow Land by Christine Dwyer Hickey is an eloquent novel, set in America in the 1950s. It depicts the relationships between various people who are spending the summer in adjoining houses on Cape Cod: the artist Edward Hopper and his wife Josephine, a ten-year-old German orphan, Michael, who was relocated to the USA after World War Two, and the family he is staying with during the summer holidays.

We learn a little bit about Michael's past, but the majority of the story is based around a few short weeks in August. It took me a while to get into the book, and it is quite slow-going throughout, with not an awful lot going on at times, but it is beautifully written and I enjoyed it very much.
