The Narrow Land is a beautiful, eloquently written story. Every aspect is described in great detail from the captivating scenery to the interesting characters.
This wouldn’t be my normal genre of novel (I would usually choose something a bit more pacy) however Christine Dwyer Hickey has opened my eyes to a whole new world of literature. I understand now that a book doesn’t need to be full of action to be appealing.

I have read several reviews which suggest this book is tedious but if you let yourself enjoy the rich language and detail, then you will become lost in the story and you will enjoy it immensely.

The book follows several characters on their summer vacation to Cape Cod. Michael, a young orphan from Germany, is sent by his adoptive family to spend the summer with Richie and his mother. Edward Hopper and Jo are artists hoping to rediscover their love for painting. Unlikely friendships are formed between the young boys and the Hoppers.
At times, Jo expresses her disdain for her husband and comes across as jealous and needy. Edward seems to shut down all attempts of affection or conversation from Jo and is unlikeable at first. However when they meet Michael and Richie, it seems to bring out a softer side in both of them.
