I love the cover of this book, it really catches your eye however it’s slightly infuriating as it gives you no clue as to the content. I was initially unsure of the book, the style of writing took a little getting used to however after some time I realised the book had totally drawn me in and captivated me. The story itself is told primarily from the aspects of 10 year old Michael and Mr & Mrs Aitch, better known as the artists Edward and Jo Hopper with some input from Michael’s adoptive mother. All of these characters are very complex and their behaviour is extreme, it’s definately fair to say none are likeable and yet you can almost feel some sympathy for them, more so Michael who clearly still suffers from his past and feels as though he is still labelled by it and as such feels the need to challenge those around him. The book is extremely light on action but heavy on insight in the minds of the characters. Whilst not my usually style of book this offered a complex but pleasant change.
