I could not have been more disappointed. I had anticipated writing a thoroughly uplifting review on this book. The front cover is an absolute delight to look at and the premis of a story set in Cape Cod exhilarating.
Instead I found the book quite mournful. The characters mostly depressing, the relationships well set out but almost too carefully. Not quite as flowing as one would wish.
I truly appreciated the authors prose on the landscapes, which do paint an extraordinary picture as you feel you are looking out on it at times, and I am certain that others could read this book and think it marvellous. But, for me, there was always this repressive bleakness from the characters underlying everything, what little joy in the story just wasn’t enough to draw me in and sadly it wasn’t for me.
