This novel conveys the world of post WW2 beautifully from the viewpoint of a young German boy living in the US.

The writing flows seemlessly between past and present. The horror of wartime Germany is contrasted very well with the post war progress of America. Descriptions are vivid and add to the atmosphere.

As a reader you instantly feel for this boy who has lived so much in his short life. I loved the period details and the boy's journey into his new culture. The boy's difficulties in making sense of the past and present create much pathos for the reader.

Unlike many novels narrative viewpoint shifts which I think helps the reader gain a fuller picture of the narrative world created.

A good read with many questions the reader wants answers to.
