This was difficult to get through, it reminded me somewhat of trying to move through sludge. Perhaps a little harsh but excuse me. I've seen other reviews of people saying The Narrow Land is a lot like Marmite and I have to agree. I can see why people would love this book but it's not for me. I truly loved the character progression throughout this book and how when we found out different, somewhat unlikable, characters (mainly the adults) backstories it put perspective on why they act the way they do. The main underlying current to this book would be loss, and although there are glimmers of kindness that make you hopeful for the future for these characters, I found that I had very little to no compassion for them other than for Michael. Perhaps it was the authors almost lyrical writing style that I could not get on with but I won't be rereading this book nor anything else from Christine Dwyer Hickey.
I would like to say a huge thank you to Atlantic Books and Readers First for an advanced copy of this book in exchange for an honest, non-biased review.
