The book starts with Michael, a German orphan, being sent off to live with a family in Cape Cod for the summer. The first scenes on the train journey were really absorbing and I wanted to read on.
He feels very displaced and as a reader, we end up feeling the same.
I don't mind a slow story if it meanders along and draws you in, however I never really felt that involved or engrossed in this one. The narrative jumps around quite a lot and this felt quite disjointed to me.
Full of complex, and pretty dislikeable characters throughout, nothing really endears you to anyone! If you like character driven books with very little plot, this would definitely be one for you!
