I was really looking forward to reading this novel after previously enjoying on of Dwyer Hickey's earlier books.

I was drawn in by the beautiful cover, which is actually1950's painting 'Sea Watchers' by Edward Hopper, who is actually one of the central characters in this novel.

However, unfortunately I just didn't enjoy this book. I found I wasn't eager to keep picking it up and thought it was a very slow and plodding book.

This would have been fine if the characters had been more likeable but I just couldn't find anyone to cheer for (although I did feel for Michael and all he had been through as a young child).

The picturesque descriptions of 1950s Cape Cod were beautiful but bored me after a while.

I also grew increasingly annoyed at the way chapters would often start with 'He' or 'She'.

All in all, not a book I shall be revisting.
