This is a gentle, slow moving book, set largely over a summer in Cape Cod, shoryly after the end of WW2 and based on a small number of principle characters whose lives intertwine.
The book starts with a 10 year old boy Michael who is sent to Cape Cod for the summer. He lives with a family, with a boy the same age whom he does not get on with, and spends much time alone. He meets an artist couple who are experiencing their own issues, and their lives become intertwined.
The book moves along at a gentle pace, but is really beautifully written.
The only thing I found a little difficult was that many of the chapters or sub chapters start with he or she, and it can take a while to work out which he or she it is! However, overall I enjoyed this book and would recommend it to others.
