This is an easy to read fantasy tale which comprises of The Mortal Realm, which is made up of five separate Kingdoms and Oksenya. The Gods inhabit Oksenya, a place from which they banished monsters, and sent them to live with the humans in The Mortal Realm.
Monsters are not allowed to kill in The Mortal Realm, if they do then they will have a curse placed upon them by the Gods. This curse is delivered by a Herald, a messenger of Gods. These Heralds are also responsible for ferrying lost souls to their afterlife.
The book has two narrators - Atia, a Nefas, the last of her kind alive; and Silas, a Herald for the Gods. These two characters are forced, through circumstance, to strike up an unlikely alliance and together they travel The Mortal Realm in search of the beings that will enable them to get out of the predicament that they find themselves in.
