This is such an interesting and unique premise! I loved the author's previous book, Princess of Souls, and was already excited to see what she released next, however the blurb had me hooked before even starting the book. The book starts with a gorgeous map, which I always love. From there, the author introduces fascinating and morally grey characters, and starts with clever and intricate world building. Whilst I did find the pacing a little off (some parts felt slow and then it changed to fast-paced action, almost in a rush to the finish), it didn't ruin my reading experience. I would have preferred more content and the book to be changed into a duology. Despite this, the writing is lyrical and engaging, and there is plenty of action. This is an atmospheric fantasy, with the found family trope and a sprinkle of romance. An enjoyable read!
