There was a lot in this novel that I thought would be promising. I was very excited by the premise and I thought this dark fantasy romance would be a really exciting book. It also sounded like something completely different to anything I'd read. While I understood what this book was trying to do, I thought it completely failed.
Normally, I love the found family trope in fantasy novels. I really enjoy novels where a band of characters have to come together to solve a common goal. I think some of the best novels have a cast of really vivid, dynamic characters. However, the plot is really badly paced, none of the characters had any real character development, and the romance felt forced.
My biggest problem with this novel was how you never really feel connected to the characters. All of a sudden, they're really close but you don't know how it happened because there was nothing that drew them together.
