I'm quite intrigued how the two stories, separated by such a vast time period, will come together. The girl we are first introduced to seems a very inquisitive sort, which can only get her in trouble in a long sea voyage. Mentioning the protection against pirates almost guarantees we are going to run into pirates. Knowing the ship never makes it's destination takes out some of the jeopardy though.
