A different world
The writing in the night ship is good. The atmosphere is real and you are pulled into the two distinct but linked worlds of Mayken and Gil.
I am not sure what Gil’s story added to the story if the Batavia? It was an interesting and complex tale in itself but other than the coincidental geography I am not sure what the links were?
The historical aspect of Mayken’s story is fascinating and I enjoyed learning about life aboard the Batavia, as well as the superstitions and legends of the time.
I feel the book would have been better focusing on Mayken’s timeline alone. Telling us more about the characters on the boat and their destinies.
That said I did enjoy the story of Gil and there were so many threads to unpick here thus could easily have been a book in its own right.
Overall this book has good writing, great atmosphere and plenty to keep you interested.
