This book is not my usual go to genre but I did enjoy it. It is a tale of two children centuries apart, 1628 and 1989, linked by the night ship in the book title. I found the book a bit slow to start with as the groundwork for the story was laid. In the earlier setting I fell in love with the mischievous Mayken and her thirst for knowledge. How she is determined to find out about the goings on in every area of the ship. Gil, the main character in the latter story took me longer to get to know. Both storylines see their characters plagued by an evil creature from folklore, a creature very similar in each case; whether this is a product of their circumstances or their imagination is up to the reader to figure out. By halfway through the book I could not put it down, I was so entwined in both their stories. I was willing them both to escape from their situations. I was so moved by this book by the time I finished it. A slow burn initially but well worth reading.
