The Night Ship written by Jess Kid is an excellent historical fiction novel that will draw you in from the first page. The story follows the lives of two main characters. Mayken, a young girl who boards the Batavia in 1629 with her nursemaid Imke, and follows her adventures above and below deck. Then over 300 years later in 1989, Gil, a young boy goes to live with his Grandfather who is a fisherman off the coast of Western Australia where he discovers a shipwreck.
Although I am aware of Jess Kidd, I had not read any of her work previously, and this book has definitely inspired me to go and read more of her books. Her writing is amazing and atmospheric and she really makes the story come alive. I highly recommended reading this novel.
