Half way through reading I decided to look up The Batavia ship just out of curitosity and then did I find that it was a real ship & the whole of The Night Ship is based on it’s tragic history. I absolutely adore any book based on true historical events - I’m a sucker for historical learning. And this is one of those stories that I’m shocked I never knew about and one that will stick with me.

A few things I loved:
⭐️ Dual narrative between 2 children 300 years apart
⭐️ Mimicking of the writing style in certain chapters between 1600s Mayken & 1980s Gil. This clever narrative device made it so poetic.
⭐️ the hint of a ghost story
⭐️ the tragedy of true historical events was told in a devastatingly poetic way
⭐️ clearly very well researched

The Night Ship has to be my favourite book of the year so far. I had high expectations as everyone loves a Jess Kidd novel, and as my first Jess Kidd novel, I was simply blown away.
