The Night Ship tells the tale of two children; Mayken on board The Batavia in 1628, and Gil on Beacon Island in 1989.

This book took me a while to really get into it. I would say I started to get really into it about a quarter of the way through. The writing I could not fault, I feel my reason for the initially struggle was getting to grips with where the story was going. As the drama really started to unfold I found myself struggling to put the book down.

Based on the real life shipwreck of The Batavia, I feel Kidd did a wonderful job of telling Mayken's story. This is especially apparent after the ship wrecked and you had to get to grips with the 'every man for himself' attitude.

This book details friendship and tragedy in a beautiful way without it being triggering to the reader. While one of our main protagonists did not have the happy ended we would have liked for a character you grow to love, I like to think the future becomes brighter for the other.
