Oh this book! I knew I would enjoy it but it was even better than I thought it would be! I fell in love with it instantly. It broke my heart many a time!

It is based around the true events of the Batavia wreck that happened in 1629 where many men, women and children died either on board or later on land where the ship wrecked. A group of corrupt passengers murdered some of the others in cold blood including children. An absolutely horrific part of history and Jess Kidd definitely brought them justice in her book.

It features fictional characters alongside some real life ones too which made it even more hard hitting to read about. The character of Mayken I adored. She was such a brave yet mischievous little girl who you cannot help but grow attached to.

The other part of the story follows a young boy called Gil who I also became emotionally connected to. His storyline is set in the 80’s and I again had my heart break reading his story. How him and Mayken are linked had a supernatural feel to it which I thought worked well.

When it ended I felt completely lost, my heart ached. What a dramatic and highly emotional tale!

The Night Ship is a spellbinding story of friendship and the evil side of humanity. Haunting yet beautifully lyrical and touching.
