The Night Ship written by Jess Kidd is a wonderful novel which highlights a dark historical event and combines with a fictional story which grips you from start to finish.

The story is set through two timelines as it follows the tragic journey of a fictional Mayken, a young girl who sets sail on the Batavia in 1629 alongside her nursemaid Imke and delves into what life was like onboard this ship as it precariously travelled across open sea with Mayken exploring the above and below deck, meeting the real characters who were onboard the ship and interacting with them.

300+ years later in 1989 and Gil a young boy living with his grandfather, a fisherman off the coast of Australia near to where the wreck of the Batavia was discovered

I have not read anything by this author before but will certainly look out for other books as this was well written and engaging.

Thank you to Readers first and the publishers for giving me the opportunity to read an advance readers copy of this book.
