I was so excited to read this book, it's based on a real life event involving an infamous shipwreck and jumps between two time frames - two children living centuries apart.
The Night Ship is a beautifully woven tale about Mayken, a spirited nine year old living in 1629, travelling on the Batavia to the Spice Islands. This is intricately paralleled with the life of Gil, living in 1989 on the Australian Beacon Island with his grandfather, following the death of his mother.
This is the island that holds the secrets to the shipwreck of the Batavia and you really do fall in love with the two main characters - Jess Kidd writes about them beautifully and there are many similarities between the children with the monsters that haunt them.
This is a magical story and the first I have read of Jess Kidd's books, I definitely want to try more now! Highly recommend
