“…a ship that looks ahead to a new life somewhere hot and strange.”

The Night Ship tells a story which spreads across two times, 1628 and 1989. The coming-of-age stories of two 9 year old children who are born hundreds of years apart crossover, brought together by an island off the west coast of Australia.
Based loosely on a true historical event, the sinking of the Dutch trading ship, the Batavia, which was shipwrecked, many of the crew were able to reach the shore and survived but were then murdered or sold into slavery by the merchant left in charge.

It’s a little different from Jess Kidd’s earlier novels, as it’s based on real events, but is a strong historical fiction novel for fans of the genre and still holds some of the haunting and supernatural elements readers have come to expect from her stories. I think this will also appeal to fans of Stacey Halls and Bridget Collins.
