I've been anticipating a new release from Jess Kidd and 'The Night Ship' did not disappoint.

'The Night Ship' seems to be an amalgamation of styles that serve to recreate the story of real events involving a shipwrecked cargo ship in the 17th century. There's the historical setting, but it also reads as a ghostly, magical story with fearfulness rooted into the narrative. I must admit I had to start googling the historical event whilst I was reading the book - fascinating! Kidd's writing is always creative and haunting; I thoroughly love immersing myself in her storytelling and the escapism.

This book is, as I've said, haunting, but it's also ferocious. The idea of a monster below, childhood imaginations and the reality of the brutal situation all merge together to create a fantastic read. I really enjoyed 'The Night Ship' and thoroughly recommend it. A story that reverberates through centuries explored in magnificently creative prose.
