This is such a fantastic read, Jess Kidd is one of my favourite authors and i automatically read her books when she releases them. This one is set around an island just off Australia and we follow two main characters who find themselves on the island hundreds of years apart. Mayken is a young girl traveling by ship called the Batavia on its last voyage in 1628 and Gil is a young boy sent to live with his grandfather in 1989. The story of the Batavia was apparently a true horror story and I felt that the author had researched this time very well. What I love about Jess Kidd's writing is how dark and dirty she can make the characters seem and the settings. I could picture how horrible it must have been on the ship, how awful the people on this ship were and how awful the conditions were and for a young girl like Myken i could imagine how horrific the experience must have been. I did enjoy Gil's story more and felt so sorry for him and the life and experience he was going through. I thought the story was so well written and a five stars from me. I can't wait for the next story from Jess Kidd and recommend all her previous work.
