1629 , Mayken is a young Swedish girl who boards the ship Batavia with her companion Imke (what we would call a nanny) after the death of her mother, they are headed to the East Indies where they hope to find her father . Mayken is quite a free spirited young girl and would rather be exploring (what the ships crew called the below world) she isn’t one to be sitting around chatting and doing needle work with the other “fine ladies”. From the start of their voyage imke starts to become unwell and only seems to get worse and she simply cannot look after her charge.
