I absolutely Loved this book. I was so enthralled by it, I struggled to put it down.
Judging a Book my its cover – I received an absolutely stunning paper back version of The Night Ship. The book is navy with gold imagery and stars, It feels slightly embossed so its lovely to touch. If you wanted to make a bookshelf stand out this book would absolutely be on there.
The Night Ship tells the story of the Batavia, but from 2 perspectives, One from Maykken in 1628 and one from Gil in 1989.
Maykken is on a long voyage aboard merchant vessel, The Batavia. We follow Maykkens journey with her nursemaid Imke learning about the politics and characters aboard the Batavia. Maykken has a thirst for adventure and a vivid imagination. She is a likable character and really details and gives a great visualization of the characters aboard.
Gil Is a young boy, orphaned and sent to live with his Grandfather Joss on the lonely fishing island, which is historically referred to as the Batavia Graveyard. Gils life has been hard, his mother had been a drug user and had overdosed (it seems). Gil befriends different inhabitants of the lonely Island and learns the story of the Batavia.
I wasn’t aware of the Batavia story, and the book had me googling and doing my own research. What I found was that the book mixes historical accuracies with fiction – making the Night Ship a compelling read.
Though the tale is somewhat troubling, its apparent that JessKidd, the author has done her research. Maykkens tale is very probable and the characters around her are the people who were really aboard the Batavia.
If you are a fan of Treasure Island, or TV series the Terror this is definitely a book for you. I had watched the Terror- it terrified me (because I love cruising!) but this story although tragic was a brilliant read.
